Densely packed with symbolism, this piece is a summary representation of the experience of migrants and refugees across the world. The central figure of the father and child are a harrowing image taken from the recent Haitian refugee crisis. The transparent American flag behind them represents the hope for a better future, but upon closer inspection it is stitched from the elements of more hardship. The waves of water surrounding them are made of chains, signifying the way in which desperate journey can either literally drown you or, if successful reaching the far shore, find you drowning in the often hostile environment of your rebirth.
